The product range from the quartz crystals specialists PETERMANN-TECHNIK includes SMD quartz crystals with very low resistance for extremely rapid and reliable oscillation start-up. These are the SMD03025/4 (in 3.2 x 2.5 mm/4 pad ceramic housing) and SMD02016/4 (in 2.0 x 1.6 mm/4 pad ceramic housing) series, among others. During the course of our extensive in-circuit tests, we always find that the negative input resistances for the tested oscillator stages are very low and there are then very large dispersions from IC to IC. But the applications must become smaller and smaller, meaning that the development engineers have to rely on small quartz crystal housings. However, SMD quartz crystals in smaller housings have a higher resistance in comparison with SMD quartz crystals of the same frequency in larger housings and, owing to their higher resistances, oscillate more slowly and less stably in the oscillator stage. For example, the LOW ESR quartz crystals with a standard frequency of 32 MHz typically have an ESR of 6 Ohm, (SMD03025/4 series) or 15 Ohm (SMD02016/4 series). For use in radio applications, these 32 MHz LOW ESR quartz crystals enable a very rapid and extremely reliable oscillation performance, meaning that the appropriate radio applications are able to transmit optimally and with extremely good energy efficiency, within the specified duty cycles. Both quartz crystal series can be delivered with a frequency tolerance of <±10 ppm at 25 °C and temperature stabilities of ±10 ppm @ -20/+70 °C, ±15 ppm @ -40/+85 °C, ±30 ppm @ -40/+105 °C, or ±50 ppm @ -40/+125 °C. Of course, automotive versions (AECQ200) can also be delivered in both ceramic housings. The frequency spectrum of 3.2 x 2.5 mm quartz is 8 – 80 MHz in the fundamental range. The 2.0 x 1.6 mm quartz of the SMD2016/4 series can be obtained in a frequency range of 20 – 64 MHz. The quartz of the SMD03025/4 series in a 3.2 x 2.5 mm ceramic housing is one of the most cost-effective series of quartz crystals in the world. In applications for which the 3.2 x 2.5 mm ceramic housing is too big, the specialists at PETERMANN-TECHNIK recommend using the compact 2.0 x 1.6 mm ceramic housing version from the SMD2016/4 series. Of course, reduced resistance 32,768 kHz quartz crystals are also available in the PETERMANN-TECHNIK product range.
